430. WE-HERAEUS-SEMINAR Accelerators and Detectors at the Technology Frontier

26-29 April 2009 - Physikzentrum Bad Honnef, Germany

Scientific Background

Since many years particle accelerators and detectors are used not only in fundamental research but also in a wide range of applied research topics. Examples are medical and industrial applications. Therefore technologies developed for basic research are securing the applied research for tomorrow.

The technology is described best as high technology. This includes the development for new improved materials for superconducting magnets and accelerating structures as well as high-resolution silicon based particle detectors. With the development of free-electron laser technology nanometer wavelength is within reach.

Medical engineering has profited from these developments. Specially designed accelerators and detectors introduce new possibilities into medical research. The last generation of particle detectors using semiconductors allow for an unprecedented resolution together with reasonable cost. One of the fields of application is positron-emission therapy (PET).

Goals of the seminar

The seminar is aiming to introduce physics students to recent developments in the fields of particle accelerators and detectors.

A wide range of applications in these fields will be covered by experts from several institutions ranging from Universities, research laboratories and industry. The students will be given an opportunity to present their own work, thus enabling a dialogue which should stimulate further collaborative research.

Application

The total number of participants is limited. Full consideration will be given to applications received before February 28, 2009. Interested students can apply HERE.

You will receive notification about acceptance by beginning of March 2009 together with further information concerning your accommodation, travel plans, a request for providing us with an abstract, etc.

Due to the generous support by the Wilhelm and Else Heraeus-Foundation, participation in the meeting, including meals and accomodation will be free of charge for all participants.
