Excursions
This page contains details on the excursion destinations in Garching on Friday.
Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics (IPP)
The IPP is situated in Garching and investigates plasma physics as the foundation of the developement of nuclear fusion reactors. To perform the research, it runs two large-scale experiments: the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak in Garching and the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator at the institute branch in Greifswald in Northeastern Germany. It is also engaged in other international projects, especially in the JET experiment and in ITER.
Walther-Meißner-Institute for Low Temperature Research (WMI)
The WMI dedicates its work to the investigation of physics at low temperature. It focusses on superconductivity, quantum and correlated electron systems, magnetism and also quantum computing. Next to the institute's contributions to the fundamental research, it is also involved in applications and develops new techniques in these fields.
Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics (MPQ)
The MPQ investigates many facets of quantum physics. Its focusses lie on quantum optics, quantum dynamics, quantum many-body systems and attosecond physics. The research is conducted theoretically and experimentally as well.
Walter Schottky Institute (WSI)
The Walter Schottky Institute (WSI) undertakes research in the field of nano and material science. Special focusses lie on semiconductor materials, optoelectronics, photonics and quantum technology as well.
Leibnitz Supercomputing Centre (LRZ)
The Leibnitz Supercomputing Centre (LRZ) provides IT services for universities and research facilities in Bavaria. Besides fascinating technological facilities accomplishing such efforts, it also comprises research activies on subjects like Green IT, virtual reality and astrophysics.
