Merry Christmas and all the best for the new year 2025
As another year draws to a close, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the many events that have shaped the Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft (DPG) this year. We want to take this opportunity to express our heartfelt gratitude to you – our dedicated members and especially our incredible volunteers – for your loyalty, trust, and tireless commitment.
A year of internationality and cooperation
The year 2024 was all about international interactions. In a world full of conflicts and challenges, science continues to demonstrate its ability to bridge cultures. Open discourse and cross-border cooperation are essential to face the big questions of our time.
The DPG Spring Meetings once again served as a platform for exchange among physicists from around the world. A standout highlight was the first-time awarding of numerous scholarships to international participants from Eastern Europe and from the SESAME community in the Middle East, which was made possible by the generous support of the Wilhelm and Else Heraeus Foundation.
In April, we launched the QuanTour project to mark the upcoming International Year of Quantum Science and Technology 2025: a quantum source travelling to laboratories in 13 different countries accross Europe to draw attention to quantum physics and its applications. This ambitious project impressively demonstrates how science promotes curiosity and collaboration across borders.
Another highlight was the General Assembly of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) in China in October, which was held in person for the first time in seven years. This once again underscored the importance of science staying in dialogue, even in challenging times, and fostering communication between nations.
Gratitude to our volunteer members
None of these advancements would have been possible without the active participation of our members, and particularly the many dedicated volunteers. They all play a key role in strengthening the DPG, not only as an institution but as a vivid platform for the international physics community.
We would like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your commitment and passion. Your support has made 2024 a bridge-building year. We would like to invite you to review a brief selection of activities in 2024 with us.
Looking ahead
We look forward to building on these successes in the coming year. Together, we will shape the Quantum Year 2025 with exciting events, projects and lively dialogue.
We wish you and your families a Merry Christmas, good health, happiness and a good start to the Quantum Year 2025.
