This lecture will be held at Magnus-Haus and can be followed online, too. Follow the links above to register your attendance in person on site or to receive login details for online attendance.

Topic: The successful treatment of cancer is one of the greatest challenges in medicine. Tumor treatment using ionizing radiation is an established method and aims to kill all cancer cells in the tumor while sparing surrounding healthy organs. To achieve this, it is important to determine the location of the tumor and to concentrate the radiation dose in it - both with high precision. Therapy with proton beams instead of photons enables gentler treatment by reducing the dose outside the tumor. The talk will outline physical challenges and solutions for successful accelerated charged particle therapy and discuss medical options.

CV: Armin Lühr, born in 1980, has been Junior Professor of Medical Physics at TU Dortmund University since 2020, where he heads the Medical Physics and Radiotherapy group at the Department of Physics. As a researcher, he has worked both at the National Center for Radiation Research in Oncology - OncoRay in Dresden, at the Helmholtz-Center Dresden-Rossendorf, and at the University Hospital in Aarhus, Denmark. Previously, he had received his PhD in theoretical atomic physics from HU Berlin. His research on physical and medical aspects of radiation therapy focuses on the further development of proton therapy, the biological and clinical effectiveness of different types of radiation, and individualized therapy optimization.

Following the lecture, there will be a get-together where participants can exchange ideas with each other over pizza and drinks in the Remise and the garden of the Magnus-Haus.

The event is sponsored by the Wilhelm and Else Heraeus Foundation.
