About
Organization and Aims
The Working Group Undergraduate Physics Laboratory (AGPP) is aimed at the advancement of laboratory courses physics in universities. Members are staff of universities sharing commitment to the organization and realization of the practical education in physics. According to the standing order of the AGPP, an elected executive board of five members coordinates the activities. The AGPP provides support in
- Development of educational experiments
- Application and evaluation of didactic concepts
- Questions related to organization and legal terms
- Qualification of staff
Furthermore, the concept of the AGPP highlights the significance of laboratory courses and provides a main contact for panels and institutions. Ongoing activities are
- A network for the promotion of knowledge
- Annual conferences at varying universities that comprise the presentation of the local labs
- Regular workshops with specific topics
- Public-related activities and education of school teachers
- The AGPP Experiment award
- Membership in boards committed to physics-related university education
History
The AGPP originated in the 1970s in former Eastern Germany to promote – not different from today – an adequate design of laboratory courses. A special focus was the need for custom-made development and fabrication of suitable equipment.
After the German reunification, the demand for a forum like this became soon obvious. To this end, the PLT conference in autumn was extended to the whole German territory. Since 1997 it is complemented by the DPG meeting, a spring meeting in the DPG Physikzentrum, Bad Honnef. After forming a structure within the DPG association Physics Education, since 2017 the AGPP constitutes an independent, cross-disciplinary working group of the DPG. We welcome international guest that stimulate our network with personal experiences.
