Research Agenda: The research of my team and I contributes to the understanding of how complex collective behavior emerges in solids, how it can be induced and controlled, and what experimentally observable consequences thereof are. Our goal is both to foster fundamental understanding of complex quantum states, and to explore their potential applications in bulk materials, microstructured devices, as well as artificially engineered quantum systems. We understand our work as building bridges from the fundamental quantum properties of solids towards their applications in quantum technology.
Short Bio: Tobias studied physics in Karlsruhe (Germany) and Grenoble (France). He obtained his PhD from the University of Cologne in 2012 with a thesis on "Quantum Critical Matter" under the supervision of Prof. A. Rosch. He then joined the groups of Prof. D. Loss in Basel, Switzerland (2012-2014) and Prof. M. Vojta in Dresden, Germany (2014-2017) as a postdoc.
Since 2017, Tobias has been the head of an independent junior research group on "Quantum Design" at the Technische Universität Dresden (Germany), for which he received an Emmy Noether grant.
In 2022, Tobias' groundbreaking work was recognized with the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz prize, Germany’s most important award for early career researchers.
