The Heidelberg Integration Competition 2024
On 28 May, the time had finally come: after a long period of preparation, the first Integration Bee took place in Heidelberg.
Impressions of the evening
In front of an audience that had to crowd into the lecture hall and a well-attended YouTube livestream, the Integration Bee 2024 kicked off with the professors' duel. One professor competed against an entire team of doctoral students from another working group and easily prevailed against them thanks to his experienced computing skills.
At the same time, the participants for the quarter-finals were determined by means of a test in the neighbouring lecture hall. Once this had been corrected and all the places were clear, the quarter-finals could begin.
Although these rounds included some of the most difficult integrals in the competition, 3 candidates were ultimately able to prevail and advance to the semi-finals.
Before the semi-finals, however, there was a short break to take a breather and eat a few snacks. (Even though all the pretzels were already sold out at this point due to the underestimated number of spectators)
As a total of 4 and not 3 participants are required for the semi-finals, the winner of the Integration Bee preliminary round from Karlsruhe has now been announced and welcomed. The winner had already prevailed a week earlier against his fellow competitors from Karlsruhe in a preliminary round held there, which was organised by the jDPG RG Karlsruhe.

By beating Tom in the first semi-final, Karan was the first to qualify for the final of the Integration Bee.

In order to keep a cool head between the exciting final rounds of the competition, the audience was also treated to a lecture On the error theory of AB under the assumption that apples cannot fly. This was made possible by an ingenious PowerPoint karaoke by a professor.

Felix won the second semi-final by spectacularly winning the best-of-five round against Christian (Karlsruhe) after trailing 0:1.

Karan Agrawal and Felix Röper faced each other in the final. Both had already beaten more than a dozen other candidates during the course of the evening. But the integrals to be solved in the final were quite something: with submitted integrals and guest contributions from great maths YouTubers such as Mathemaniac & MindYourDecisions, the final was a real spectacle.

However, thanks to a narrow lead, Felix also managed to emerge victorious in the final after 5 integrals.
