With his interdisciplinary group, consisting of scientists from chemistry, physics, biology, biophysics, biochemistry, medical physics and the life sciences, Malte Drescher is developing magnetic resonance methods to elucidate the structure and dynamics of large bio-molecules. This involves nothing less than the mechanisms of life: the aim of the method development is to explore biological structures at the molecular level directly in the cell. Intrinsically disordered proteins known as "chameleon proteins" are of particular interest: They react to their environment and have a key role in neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's or Alzheimer's disease.
